About Department of Library & Information Science

The Department of Library and Information Science, Panjab University, has a rich legacy of library education in India. The first university-level course in Library Science was initiated by Panjab University at Lahore in 1915 before the Partition of India, laying the foundation for professional library education in the country.

At the Chandigarh campus, a Postgraduate Diploma in Library Science was introduced in 1960, which later evolved into the Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.Lib.I.Sc.) and Master of Library and Information Science (M.Lib.I.Sc.) programmes. The Department also introduced the Ph.D. programme in 1972–73, demonstrating its commitment to advanced research and scholarship.

Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Department currently offers the Two-Year Integrated M.Lib.I.Sc. Programme and the Two-Year Integrated M.Lib.I.Sc. with Research Programme, preparing students for professional excellence, innovation, and research leadership in the information and knowledge sector.

Mission
The Department offers Master of Library & Information Science (M.Lib.I.Sc.) (Two-Year Integrated) and Master of Library & Information Science (M.Lib.I.Sc.) with Research (Two-Year Integrated) Programmes alongwith Ph.D. programme. The programmes are based on the practices and underlying theories of information acquisition, organization, dissemination and utilization. On completion of the courses, the students demonstrate the values, attitudes, and behaviours associated with the roles and responsibilities of information and library professionals in accordance with the market oriented employment. The mission is not simply to ensure that each student gains adequate employment, but to prepare graduates to assume responsible positions in libraries and information centers. Faculty is expected, through their instructional, research, and service activities, to contribute tangibly to the development of the knowledge base that makes Library and Information Science a discipline as well as a profession. Our, mission is in line with the mission of the university and aim to make it a better place for teaching and learning.
